23-8-17                                                                                                  Analytical  Article no. 21

Selection of an actor or an actress for a movie was never an easy task and has become more complicated with the advent of new technology every other day. To leave lasting impressions in the mind of movie watchers, movies are being produced close to reality. Even selection of an artist involves lots of tests including some biological tests. Amir Khan Production had planned to make a movie on women sports in which Amir would have a leading role. They short listed wrestling as they had found an interesting story. The story had two key female characters who would become wrestler of international levels.

The search began outside the industry and interested candidates were motivated to give screen and other tests. There were two basic requirements for the prospective actress, they should be good actor and they should be good in wrestling. Those who were better wrestler but not so good actor were not preferred as the movie had so many emotional scenes which were necessary for the quality of film.

Auditions of more than 10,000 females were taken. All the females who were selected had to go through medical check-ups. The main part of medical test was hormonal test. The purpose of the test was’ if they can put on some weight or not’. Some bodies are so designed genetically that they cannot put on weight though, how hard they work out. Help of dietitians were also taken to test their physical endurance.

In the final round 3 girls were short listed who had managed to clear above tests. Finally Sanya Malhtra and Fatima Shaikh were selected who had everything the movie needed. It was followed by 10 days of various internal training.  They were also trained by national coach kripa to make them fight like international wrestler. The training lasted for two years.

New currency is in circulation.

5-8-17

There is a new type of currency in circulation for past many years but hardly a few people knew about that. It came into knowledge of common people, when the ransom virus ‘WannaCry’ blocked the computers (especially run on older versions of Windows) and the ransom was asked in Bitcoin. Bitcoin (launched in 2009) is the most popular virtual currency (unlike traditional currency which can be felt in hands) and is kept in virtual wallet where one coin is equal to about 3000 dollars (over 2 lakh Rs) on 7-8-17 whereas it was 2,760 dollars on 4-8-17. On August 1, Bitcoin holds almost 50% of world market share in terms of value. (Other popular digital or virtual currencies are Ethereum and Ripple etc). There are more than 1,000 such currencies.

A digital or virtual currency uses cryptography (hence, also known as cryptocurrency) for safeguard, so it is difficult to counterfeit. It is not issued by a central authority like RBI and is difficult to trace hence government intervention is not possible. After Demonetization and implementation of GST in India circulation of black money has been limited. Obviously there is lookout for new ways to hide extra money to avoid taxes and the best bet goes in favor of digital currency. The other benefit of such currencies is that they provide fastest transfer of fund to any location in the world and can be utilized after 10 minutes of transfer and is less costly comparing to other mode of transfer of fund.

There is another benefit, cryptocurrency (Bitcoin etc) value fluctuates as per demand and supply of cryptocurrency (Bitcoin etc)  and there are cryptocurrency (Bitcoin etc) virtual exchanges where they are exchanged at the current market price. This feature has attracted many investors towards it to make some quick money, however, it is very-very risky as it is controlled by no central authority, hence there is no place to complain.  Anyone can lose his money if a computer is crashed or hacked. So far Bitcoin has seen more than 40 cases of theft. In some case the amount lost was more than 1 million dollars.

The popularity of a digital or virtual currency has forced nations around the globe to either legalize this format of currency or issue guidelines regarding sale and purchase of such currency. Even government of India is seriously thinking in this direction (because 10% of trade in cryptocurrency generated from India and is a serious threat to Indian economy. A committee including finance ministry officials, IT ministry officials, NITI Aayog and RBI officials will consider to legalize or not the virtual currencies in India. If the decision comes in favor, Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) will be asked to regulate the transactions, Investor will be taxed as regular.

To make digital or virtual currency more user friendly or to attract more Investors, considering the popularity it has gained, a new trend has emerged. The new trend is called splitting the digital or virtual currency. Bitcoin has Introduced Bitcoin cash a smaller version of Bitcoin. When Bitcoin was 2,760 dollars Bitcoin cash was 370 dollars. In 2016, Ethereum was split whose current price is around ethereum (225 dollars) and ethereum classic (15 dollars).

Considering the huge amount of risk involved, the investment decision should be based on the guidance and advice of  a market expert.

Electric vehicles without batteries.

3-8-17

India will make electric vehicles but will sell them without batteries.

Indian Government has an ambitious vision to run most of the vehicles on Indian roads on battery power by 2030. This is an attempt to improve the health of the ailing environment due to toxic emission from diesel and petrol vehicles whose number is on the rise. Some of the advantages of electric vehicles will be ‘no smoke’, no noise, no oil use.

Electric vehicles have approximately 20 moving parts in comparison to 2,000 parts in Petrol and diesel vehicles. Electric vehicles have no IC engine hence they do not need oil to operate. They are run by an electric motor, powered by a pack of rechargeable tract ion batteries. The power transmission takes place through conventional gear box and differential. The speed is controlled by an Electronic Chopper Controller and gear changing. The maximum speed is approximately 40 KMPH whereas per charge a electric vehicle runs approximately 70 Km.

Initially the scheme is available for non-AC public transport under which vehicles will be sold without batteries as part of the plan, thus slashing prices by as much as 70%. The batteries will be leased at a specified cost and can be swiftly swapped with recharged ones at various recharge stations which will take 5 to 10 minutes.

The intention behind this scheme, ‘selling electric vehicle without batteries”, is to reduce burden on subsidy provided by Indian government.  US, Japan and china have spent billions on subsidy for electric vehicles, but have not gained much as number of electric vehicles is still low as compared to oil based vehicles.

The scheme is also going to give 'Make in India' program a boost. In the beginning, cells for the batteries will be imported. If the scheme clicks, they will be manufactured in India itself.

Q. Which type of plan India will follow by selling electric vehicles without batteries?

Q. Which functions of marketing has been mentioned above?

Q. How many elements of Business Environment will be affected?

Since McDonald’s(@McDonalds) is operating since 1940 and has branches in more than hundred countries, it was not difficult to set up a suitable organization structure in India. They easily identified and divided the work to be performed in future to run the fastest food chain.  Activities which were similar in nature were grouped together. The basic criteria was functions such as finance, marketing, sales, customer services, franchising, security, hygiene and safety, property and construction, supply chain and restaurant service.

Next, they finalized nature of every job and minimum skill required to perform such jobs to make sure, work must be assigned to those, who are best fitted to perform the Job. They further decided that, if necessary, required training will be provided to concerned employee. When Amit Jatia (who managed McDonald’s branches in South and west India, joined the McDonald’s family in March 1995 as MD, Hardcastle Restaurants Pvt. Ltd(Joint Venture of McDonald’s and Mr. Jatia).  He had to go on training for a year at McDonald’s in Jakarta (Indonesia). He also learned Hamburgerology from the Hamburger University, Oak Brook (Illinois, USA).

It has been made clear from the beginning that who is to report whom hence it is clear in the mind of every single employee who he has to take orders from and to whom he is accountable. This created hierarchical structure to help in coordination among-st various departments created. By carefully defining and delegating responsibilities and authorities, an attempt has been made to establish formal relationships among employees. This enabled prospective employees to work, together, and that too most effectively to achieve their Goals in India.
